What Ever Happen to The Daughter of Destruction?

One of my favorite characters in comic books was Cassandra Cain, The fourth Batgirl. I’ve always had a soft spot for martial artists and bad-asses, so it’s not really a surprise that I would love Cain. But I also loved her story. The harsh upbringing of her father trying to turn her into an assassin, but ultimately rejecting his teachings in favor of protecting others. She journeys around the world before ending up in Gotham, donning mantle of Batgirl. Cassandra Cain was one of the most skilled and dedicated of the Bat-Family, as she literally had no other life goal or experience except fighting crime.

But due to an editorial decision Cassandra Cain’s story was brought to a crashing halt. She goes from stalwart hero to criminal mastermind, leading the League of Assassins. She is even used to clean up continuity by killing Nyssa Al’Ghul, removing an irritating character cluttering up the pages.

In reaction to outrage from the fans over the changes, DC corrects the situation and reveals that Cain was drugged by Deathstroke to be evil. Once cleaned of the drugs, she returns to the family. And promptly disappears.

The next thing we hear from her is she has a new identity and is fighting crime in Asia. About as far away from Gotham as you can get. No real explanation for what she’s doing there, except to say that Batman sent her.

So Cassandra Cain is reduced from leading character, with strong stories and dedicated fanbase, to a bit character in a borderline book that struggles to keep its numbers up.

Is there anything that can be done to save her?
